The job
As part of S.P.E.C.I.E.S. international team you will work with the Executive Director and the Program Director. You will be responsible for managing your own time and working unsupervised.

Conservation Content Writer
Help us tell our story! S.P.E.C.I.E.S. is looking for journalists and writers to develop content for our website, newsletter, and social media.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct critical interviews of our global staff and partners;
- Write stories based on interviews, reports, and field notes;
- Develop content for our website, monthly newsletter, and social media platforms;
- Help build and promote the S.P.E.C.I.E.S. brand through storytelling.
Education, skills and experience
- Degree (or pursuing a degree) in communications or journalism;
- Skilled interviewer;
- Able to write accurately, convincingly, and entertainingly;
- A demonstrated passion for conservation.
Website Manager
Help us manage, update, and innovate our website!
Key responsibilities
- Manage www.carnivores.org, including maintaining the site and troubleshooting issues;
- Update the website with project updates, perspectives, news, activities, and events, working closely with the director and project director;
- Create and innovate new designs for our website to increase and promote traffic, participation, etc.
Education, skills and experience
- Experience working with WordPress;
- Technologically savvy;
- A creative and innovate mind;
- Responsive via email;
- A demonstrated passion for conservation.
Social Media and Communications
Know your way around Facebook, Twitter and the likes? We’re looking for a volunteer to help us expand our social media reach.
Key responsibilities
- Promote www.carnivores.org and prepare social media content for S.P.E.C.I.E.S. accounts (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram)
- Identify, grow and engage like-minded conservation communities of influencers, donors, partners and peers through targeted messaging;
- Generate and share appropriate content related to S.P.E.C.I.E.S. social media platforms to increase S.P.E.C.I.E.S. profile among the media, international organizations, policy makers and the general public;
- Be responsible for curating S.P.E.C.I.E.S. social media conversations; promote on social media the organization’s new reports, press releases, news, online advocacy and awareness-raising campaign;
- Assist in creating the monthly newsletter report by collaborating with field staff around the world to identify and share stories;
- Increase SPECIES’s profile among the media, international organizations, policy makers and the general public, promoting the vision, mission and strategic goals of the organization.
Education, skills and experience
- Degree (or pursuing a degree) in communications, journalism, conservation science or biology;
- Social media savvy;
- Ease with Photoshop, InDesign, and infographics tools a definite plus;
- Mother-tongue English preferred;
- Able to write accurately, convincingly, briefly and quickly to tight deadlines;
- A demonstrated passion for conservation.
Fundraising and Networking
Interested in helping us grow? We’re looking for a volunteer to help us expand our fundraising strategies.
Key responsibilities
- Assist in planning, developing and implementing fundraising strategies and campaigns;
- Research into potential donors, philanthropic support, organizations, individuals, corporations, foundations, and other funding institutions and sources;
- Identify, grow and engage like-minded conservation communities of influencers, donors, partners and peers by linking potential funders to other stakeholders and organizing meetings and events to facilitate relationships;
- Research on current trends in philanthropy that will be relevant to future SPECIES’ fundraising strategies;
- Initiate and develop new social fundraising campaigns, such as peer to peer fundraising and social networking events;
- Develop marketing campaigns through social media, email, and online advocacy.
Education, skills and experience
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and organizational skills;
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills with keen attention to detail;
- Ability to work independently under some supervision and to take initiative;
- Interest in learning fundraising software platforms;
- Creative and proactive;
- Organized and rigorous in work;
- A demonstrated passion for conservation.
Internet and Prospective Partner Researcher
Enjoy diving into research? We’re looking for a volunteer to help us gather information on a diverse range of topics.
NOTE: This is NOT a field research position
Key responsibilities
- Contribute to the collection and analysis of data to inform programmatic decisions and support development and implementation of various projects
- Research subjects will vary widely, and may include:
- Research on the biology, ecology, and conservation status of a particular species
- Information on a specific conservation issue and its impact on local communities
- Background on other conservation organizations, including their previous and current projects, and future opportunities for collaboration
- Research into potential donors, philanthropic support, organizations, individuals, corporations, foundations, and other funding institutions
- Finding potential grants and funding sources;
- Other duties and ad-hoc projects.

- Excellent research skills with keen attention to detail;
- Ability to work independently under some supervision;
- Organized and rigorous in work;
- Flexible, eager to learn, and excited about carnivore conservation.
Newsletter Editor - NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE
Help us tell our story! S.P.E.C.I.E.S. is looking for an editor to manage our bi-monthly newsletter.
Key responsibilities
- Curate newsletter themes and ideas with the director;
- Edit stories produced by S.P.E.C.I.E.S. content writers;
- Compose newsletter content and photos using Adobe InDesign;
- Design matching email template to advertise newsletter via MailChimp;
- Help build and promote the S.P.E.C.I.E.S. brand through storytelling.
Education, skills and experience
- Experienced with Adobe InDesign;
- Excellent editing skills;
- An eye for graphic design;
- A demonstrated passion for conservation.
GIS Assistant - NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE
Have a background with spatial modeling? We’re looking for an intern to collaborate on our international projects, and to potentially develop a MS or PhD project.
Key responsibilities
- Utilize spatial modeling, GIS, imagery resources, and more to enhance our understanding of species movements, distributions, and relationships with habitat;
- Analyze existing data using R;
- Collaborate and gain experience working on international projects;
- Contribute to and co-publish papers.
Education, skills and experience
- MS degree or higher (or pursuing a MS degree);
- Experience with spatial modeling, GIS and imagery resources;
- Knowledge of connectivity modeling, including integrating genetic data with habitat;
- Experience with the program R;
- Knowledge of recent advances in niche/species distribution modeling.
